Dry Needling Therapy

Dry needling is a therapeutic technique for treatment of musculoskeletal pain and human movement dysfunction.

It may be used in combination with Physical Therapy treatment, Massage Therapy, or as a solo therapy.

A very fine filament needle is inserted through the skin to the deeper tissues and muscle directly at a myofascial trigger point to decrease your pain.

Dry needling works by causing a microlesion within the pathological tissue, thus breaking up shortened tissues, inhibiting a reflex arc from the nervous system to the tissue, normalizing the inflammatory response, and centrally mediating the pain.

This mechanical and neuromuscular effect provides an environment that enhances the body’s ability to heal, which ultimately reduces pain.

What is a myofascial trigger point?

A trigger point is a small area of muscle that is in spasm (contracted), causing taut bands and hypersensitivity. These “knots” in the muscle cause a restriction of the blood supply which reduces the amount of oxygen, leading to the accumulated waste products and toxins. This accumulation sensitizes the trigger point, causing it to send out pain signals which increase local and/or referred symptoms. Therefore, a trigger point involves a vicious repeating pain cycle that needs to be broken.

FAQ:

Does Dry needling hurt?

The fine filament needle is very thin, solid and flexible, which allows the needle to be pushed through the skin. Most people do not feel the insertion of the needle. The local twitch response elicits a very brief painful response. Some patients compare it to an electric shock; others feel it more like a cramping sensation. We strive to make the treatment virtually painless; however, at times a local twitch response of the muscle may be felt.

Does insurance cover Dry Needling?

Insurance USUALLY does not cover the cost of Dry Needling in most instances, so this would be an out-of-pocket expense.
